Dental x-rays have been used for decades to uncover oral health problems in their earliest stages, providing an essential diagnostic and preventive tool. Today's modern digital x-ray technology offers incredibly clear and precise images, allowing for accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans.
Digital Dental X-Rays - An Overview
Digital dental x-rays capture high-resolution images using digital sensors rather than traditional photographic x-ray film. These intricate images of your teeth, gums, and other oral structures can be enlarged, and we can zoom in on specific areas to visualize them with extreme clarity and detail.
Digital radiography reveals hidden concerns not visible during physical examination, including early signs of decay between teeth, problems under the gums, tooth pulp infection, cysts, abscesses, tumors, fractures, bone loss, poor tooth root positions, and so much more. That allows our team to make thorough, well-informed diagnoses and create effective treatment plans catered to your unique needs. Detecting dental issues in their early stages allows for prompt treatment, preventing the need for extensive and costly treatments down the road.
How Often Do You Require Digital Dental X-Rays?
During your first visit to our office, we will capture a series of digital dental x-rays to create a baseline for future reference. From then on, the frequency of x-rays will depend on your dental history, oral health practices, and risk factors for developing dental problems.
In general, most patients require a set of bitewing x-rays once or twice a year and a complete mouth series every three years. If, however, any issues surface between routine dental visits, we may need to take digital x-rays to evaluate your concerns and provide prompt treatment.
Are Digital Dental X-Rays Safe?
Digital dental x-rays are considered highly safe. In fact, the radiation levels are 90 percent lower than the already low radiation exposure of traditional dental x-rays, making them safer than ever. To put things in perspective, a set of four bitewing x-rays produces an amount of radiation of about 0.004 mSv, far less than the amount of daily environmental exposure of 0.01 mSv.
Compared to everyday living, it is easy to see how safe digital dental imaging is. However, as an added layer of safety, we only take digital dental x-rays when necessary and take all recommended precautions, including using lead aprons for your protection.
